The Phantom, a legendary comic book hero, was introduced to India and adapted into Vetal, a character rooted in Indian storytelling and cultural sensibilities. The first Phantom comic book in Hindi, ‘Vetal ki Mekhla’ (The Phantom’s Belt), was published in 1964 by Indrajal Comics, an offshoot of the Times Group. The Phantom quickly became one of the most popular comic book superheroes in the subcontinent, renamed as Vetal or Chalta Firta Pret (the phantom who walks) to cater to the Hindi readership.
